Theme of the Seminar

Despite the age-old oral and scriptural tradition, Jaina Yoga has not been discussed very widely. Huge corpus of material on this subject is available waiting to be brought to light. Therefore, it was decided to hold one or more International Seminars on Jaina Yoga so as to highlight the important aspects of Jaina Yoga vis-à-vis other Yogic Traditions of India.

The exclusive literary tradition of Jaina Yoga has evolved through the centuries, beginning with the pioneer works of illustrious Acharyas viz., Umasvati, Haribhadra, Subhachandra and I lemachandra to Upadhyaya Yasbovijayaji. Besides the works of Haribhadra, Hemachandra's Yogashastra is a comprehensive work on the subject. Patanjali's Yogasutra is known worldwide. Buddhist traditions of Yoga also have been popular since the age of the Buddha (6 ' cent. B.C.) Jain Acharyas have reverently and explicitly acknowledged methods of Patanjali's Yogasutras as well as some Buddhist Tantric concepts on the stages of spiritual evolution. Thus there is a wide scope for an updated constructive study and presentation of the Jaina Yoga, which is vibrant with life and activity all over the East and the West.

The importance of Yoga in our life cannot be overemphasized, lt is already shaping the physical, mental and spiritual behaviour of intelligentsia around the world as an essential part of their life and culture. Hence, it is natural and also imperative that an International Seminar be organized to explore and discuss threadbare the various aspects of the rich traditions of Yoga especially in India, namely, its history, methods, philosophy, spirituality, sociology, ethics and soteriology.

This seminar will endeavour to highlight the concept and practices of Jaina Yoga, an integral part of the Jaina way of life, both for monks and householders who synthesize different systems of Yoga; as a way to a happy, healthy and peaceful life free from crime, violence and disharmony.

The seminar will provide an opportunity for comparative study of various yogic traditions along with their exposition based on the original sources preserved in Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit, Apabhramsha and other regional dialects.

More than 40 specialists in this field from all over India and abroad will present their research papers. The event is expected to place Jain Yoga in its proper place in the firmament of Indian Yogic traditions and also create a wider awareness of this system of Indian Yoga.
