It is a type of karma, the rise of which is responsible for obscruing the quality of knowledge; unless the soul annihilates it completely, it cannot attain kevalajñāna; it has five sub-types

articulate knowledge

that which veils avadhijñāna,

clairvoyance

that which veils manahparyavajñāna

mind-reading knowledge

that which veils kevalajñāna

omniscience
