Whatever happens in life does not happen due to any single reason. A number of reasons stand behind that. One among them is time. When the time comes, the curiosity for truth awakens in the soul. One rises above the platform of normal life tendencies and searches for ultimate reality. The reality is that both the soul and the body are independant entities. Spiritual practices start with this point.

The realization of the unity of the soul and the body is the cause of bondage and the realization of their distinctness is the path to liberation. As this view point of distinction becomes stronger, so does passions become mild. Their mildness means - the depletion of the karmik body which in turn means the expression of the true nature of the self.

Even after gaining the knowledge of the distinctness of soul and the body, without pacifying the emotions, that feeling of distinctness of soul and body cannot be strengthened.

There are two consequences of the actions of the living being-bondage of karma and formation of instincts or sanskar. The karmik atoms are unified with the soul through its activity which is called karmic bondage. The contract of memory with action is called a habit or instinct. Both bondage and formation of instincts make the mind fickle and this fickleness obstructs the development of the power of the soul.
