Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh Chaired the third meeting of National River Ganga Basin Authority at his residence. Central Finance Minister Mr. Pranav Mukherjee, Environment Minister Mrs. Jayanti Natrajan, Water Resource minister Mr. Pawan Bansal, Chief Minister of Bihar Mr. Nitish Kumar, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Mr. Akhilesh Yadav, Chief Minister of Jharkhand Mr. Arjun Munde, Chief Minister of Uttarakhand MR. Vijay Bahuguna, representative of Chief Minister of Bengal were present on the occasion. Special invitees by Prime Minister Swamy Avimukteshvaranand of Ganga Sewa Abhiyan, Founder of Ahimsa Vishva Bharti Jain Acharya Dr. Lokesh Muni, Shahi Imam of Lucknow Shahi Masjid Kalve Rizvi Jabbas, Kalkipithadhishwar Acharya Pramod, Swamy Shivanand of Matri Sansthan, Secretary of Hindu Sabha Swamy Parmatmanand Saraswati and Experts on Ganga Dr. Vir Bhadra Mishra, President Sankat Mochan Foundation Varanasi Mr. Rajesnder Singh, Chairman Tarun Bharat Sangh Jaipur Mrs. Rama Raut, Coordinator Save Ganga Movement Pune Ms. Sunita Narayan, Director General Center for Science and Environment New Delhi, Prof. B.D. Tripathi, Banaras Hindu University, Dr. Ravi Chopra Director Peoples Science Institute Dehradun, Prof. R.K. Sinha Central University of Bihar Patna, Prof. R.S. Siddique former professor Aligarh Muslim University, Prof K. J. Nath former Director All India Institute of Public Hygiene Kolkata, Mr. Pankaj Pachauri Media advisor to Prime Minister and Secretaries of Central Forest and Environment Ministry also took part in the meeting.
Dr. Manmohan Singh addressing the meeting said that Ganga is the soul of India. Faith and beliefs of crores of Indians is associated with Ganga, so Authority Ganga will make pure and true efforts by giving special attention to restore the ancient dignity of Ganga to keep its prosperity safe for future generations.
Prime Minister further said that we have to make special efforts to create a balance between envirment conservation of Ganga and its Basin’s present situation and Economic growth and development. Increasing Urbanization, Industrialization and Population is not only polluting the Ganga water but also endangering the water capacity and existence of Ganga. Melting of Ice-Hills and Environmental changes are making adverse effect on flow of Ganga. We are facing a very complex challenge. I assure you on behalf of Central Government that we will take positive action in this direction with top priority.
Swamy Gyanswaroop Saraswati who is on Tapasya for could not attend the meeting as he is admitted in the ICU of AIIMS Hospital. Prime Minister assured that he will be consulted before taking any decision on Ganga and his suggestions will be given due attention.
Chief Minister of U.P. Mr. Akhilesh Yadav said that to removing the obstacles for maintaining Clean, Pure and Continuous Ganga a Committee consisting of Religious Leaders, Environmental Experts, Representatives from Central and State Government should be formed who will together find solution for the existing problem.
Chief Minister of Bihar Mr. Nitish Kumar expressed his concern that in the present situation there is a fear that in next 20-25 years Ganga will be completely destroyed. A Commission must be formed which will seriously find solution to the problem. He demanded an immediate Plan for 2013 Kumbh Mela.
On the Occasion Swamy Avimukteshweranand Saraswati of Ganga Sewa Abhiyan, Founder of Ahimsa Vishwa Bharti Jain Acharya Dr. Lokesh Muni, Kalkipithadishwar Acharya Pramod demanded that no Dam should be constructed on Ganga. CM of Uttrakhand Mr. Bahuguna, CM of Jharkhand Mr. Munde, Representative of Bengal CM, Water Expert Mr. Rajender Singh, Dr. Ravi Chopra, Prof. R.S. Siddique expressed their views. Environment Minister Mrs. Jayanti Natrajan compared the whole program.
