Synopsis
Act I
A Swayamvar is held for Princess Damayanti of Kundalipur, one of the most beautiful women in the world and daughter of the wealthy Raja Bhimrath and Rani Pushpavati. Suitors from all over the world attend. Amongst them are eligible Princes Kuber, Nal, Vikram and Chandrapal. Damayanti is a devout follower of Bhagwan Jineshwara and in selecting her consort chooses to ask them a series of questions. She is impressed by Nal and his devotion to Bhagwan Jineshwara and chooses him as her husband.
They begin a blissful married life and Nal becomes the popular ruler of Kundalipur. One day, Nal’s brother Kuber who secretly desires Damayanti and the kingdom starts plotting to acquire both by deceit. He invites Nal to a game of dice. Gambling becomes a habit with Nal who one day gambles away his kingdom, and even Damayanti. Nal is sent into exile by Kuber but forced to release Damayanti who loyally accompanies her husband into the forest.
Act II
Nal and Damayanti spend many years filled with hardship in the jungle. Nal cannot bear to see his wife suffer any more and decides to walk away in the night. Damayanti loses her way but, one day, is found by royal maids by the banks of the river in Achalpur. They take her back to the palace where she finds work as the guardian of the temple dedicated to Bhagwan Jineshwara. When she is accused of stealing the Bhagwan’s jewels by the jealous princess, Damayanti is taken to the Queen Chandrayasha. At this time, Damayanti’s mother, who is visiting the Queen, recognises her beloved daughter. Damayanti is embraced and happily reunited with her parents. Nal, however, is forced to take on the guise of a hunchback to avoid recognition until he is ready to reveal himself.
Act III
Raja Bhimrath and Damayanti have no knowledge of Nal’s whereabouts. A visitor informs them of delicious Surya Pak being cooked in the court of Raja Ritupal and a mad elephant being overpowered. This arouses Damayanti’s suspicions that no one other than Nal could achieve such feats and she is determined to find him. To help her, Raja Bhimrath holds a false Swayamvar to lure Nal. Indeed, Nal arrives at the Swayamvar and reveals his true identity to Damayanti.
