A living organism is neither a pure psyche (soul) nor pure matter. It is a compound of both - the conscious substance (soul) and matter (body). Conscious activity is the characteristic of soul. Colour, smell, taste and touch are characteristics of matter. Aura of a living organism is an amalgam of radiation of two energies - radiations of prana energy from conscious substance and those of electro-magnetic energy from the material body. One's mental state constitutes the impelling force of radiation of prana-energy. Though mental states are conscious function and aura is material, there is an intimate relationship between the two. In fact, aura is a true image of one's mental states. From this, it is reasonable to conclude that mental states can be inferred from aura and vice versa.
Aura is not made of a single colour, but is a mixture of several ones, because it is created by the multiplicity of lesya, and the colour of lesya is in accordance with one's mental state. The colour of lesya will correspond to the predominant emotion at any given moment. Thus, colours of all lesyas would be reflected in the aura. Virtuous emotions would produce bright colours and evil ones would produce gloomy ones. Emotions of a person keep constantly changing and so would the colours of his aura.
Perception of Psychic Colours (Lesya dhyana) is the exercise for transmuting the evil effects of the malevolent lesyas to good effects of the benevolent ones. Without resorting to its practice, the thought-direction cannot be reversed and evil reactions will continue. The three benevolent lesyas - taijasa, padma and sukla - generate three auspicious bright colours-red, golden yellow and white - respectively. Perception of these colours curbs the evil urges and transmutes the emotional state of a person. Evil thoughts (of enmity, hate etc), will be replaced by good ones (of friendship, love etc.) And, thus, internal purification of the mental state will radiate beneficial waves, affecting the environment. Perception of psychic colours is very powerful means of catharsis of evil emotions. The technique is to create impenetrable armour, which will not permit the ingress of evil thoughts in our mind. The strong protective cover fabricated by benevolent lesyas saves us from external assaults and internal turmoil. Once the protective shield is there, waves of good and benign thoughts only will be produced. These will help and not hinder our spiritual progress. Indeed, lesya itself is not tranquillity, but perception of psychic colours (lesya dhyana) helps us to reach our goal of tranquillity.
