(a) 16 Kaṣāya mohanīyaKaṣa means saṁsāra, āya means gaining. So kaṣāyas keep us in saṁsāra (worldly life).
Main four kaṣayas are as follow:
- Anger (krodha),
- Pride (māna),
- Deceit (māyā),
- Greed (lobha).
These four are grouped into two:
(1) Attachment,
(2) Hatred.Attachment includes—deceit and greed.
and hatred includes—anger and pride (ego).Each of these four kaṣāyas are further sub grouped in four divisions as follow:
- Anantānubandhī,
- Apraytayākhyanī,
- Pratyākhyanī.
- Saṁjvalana.
Therefore we have 4 x 4 = 16 kaśāyas.

(b) 9 Nokaṣāyas
No Kaṣāyas are those which provoke kaṣāyas. They are as follows:
- Laughter,
- Sorrow,
- Pleasure (being pleased with what one likes),
- Displeasure (being displeased with what one dislikes),
- Fear (fearing one's own decisions)
- Contempt
- Puruṣaveda (desiring the company of woman)
- Strī Veda (desiring the company of man)
- Napusaṅkaveda (desiring both man and woman).[16]
