Darśanāvara karma (9 sub groups)

The word darśana has two meanings in Jainism. One meaning is doctrine, philosophical system, the right view, the true faith. The second meaning of darśana is ordinary (indistinct) knowledge about an object (undifferentiated cognition). Here darśana has the second meaning. Darśanāvarṇa means blockage of ordinary knowledge. They are:

    1. Cakṣu darśanāvarṇa karma
    2. Acakṣu darśanāvarṇa karma
    3. Avadhi darśanāvarṇa karma
    4. Kevala darśanāvara karma
    5. Nidra
    6. Nidra-nidra
    7. Pracalā
    8. Pracalā-pracalā
    9. Satyānaddhi.[18]

    1

    Cakṣu (eyes) darśanāvarṇa karma

It obscures over vision of eyes.

    2

Acakṣu darśanāvarṇa karma (the non eye darśanāvarṇa karma)

Obscures ordinary knowledge of the other senses (except eyes) and the mind.

    3

    Avadhi darśanāvarṇa karma

Due to this karma the power to see without the help of senses and mind would be impaired.

    4

    Kevala darśanāvarṇa karma

Because of this karma the power to see everything would be impaired.

    5

    Nidra karma

It causes slight sleep from which one is easily awakened.

    6

    Nidra-nidra karma

It causes sleep from which one is awakened with great difficulty.

    7

    Pracalā karma

It causes the sleep while sitting or standing.[19]

    8

    Pracalā-pracalā karma

It causes sleep, but during sleep one walks.

    9

    Satyānaddhi karma

This karma causes the sleep during which one carries out an action which would be sometimes impossible during day time and may not remember what one has done during this sleep. The first four darśanāvarṇa karma do not allow the power of darśana or understanding or perception. All five types of nidras completely destroy the power of understanding.[20]

Darśanāvara karma gene

The evidence is strong that IQ is largely determined by genes.[21] This can be compared with darśanāvarṇa kṣāyopaśama karma. In other words, serotonin affects consciousness in many ways that are connected to self transcendence and spirituality. It alters perceptions, one concept of mystical experience. It increases socio-ability, an aspect of transpersonal identification. It elevates mood, an aspect of the perception of sacredness. All of this can be influenced by a simple monoamine.[22] This is compared with both darśanāvarṇa karma and darśanāvarṇa kṣāyopaśama.
