Kapalbhati Pranayama

Three types of Kapalbhati are mentioned in Gherand Samhita:

    1. Vatakrama Kapalbhati: Inhale through the left nostril and exhale through the right nostril, and then inhale through the right nostril and exhale the left nostril. Do not rush in this exercise.
    2. Vyutakrama Kapalbhati: In place of air, draw water through the nostrils and expel it through the mouth.
    3. Sheetakrama Kapalbhati: Inhale through the mouth and exhale through the nostrils making a kind of hissing sound like the letter's.' Water can also be used in place of air.

Time:

Practice for five minutes, increasing one minute every week.

Benefits:

It prevents mucus and develops brightness and luminosity of the face.

An additional type of Kapalbhati involves inhaling through both nostrils, filling the lungs as much as possible so that the diaphragm is lowered and the stomach extends outward like a balloon. Retain the breath for a while, then exhale through both nostrils.

Time:

Practice this exercise for one to five minutes.

Benefits:

It helps digestion, removes constipation, and helps in developing energy.
