Navkar Mahamantra: 9 Right Penance (Samyag Tap)

Published: 25.11.2013

Text:

Penance (Samyag Tap) is recommended by all religious systems - both Indian and Global. In Indian religious systems a monk is known as Tapasvi meaning one who practices penance. However, in Jainism penance like non-violence and self-control has been taken to the pinnacle of glory. All Jain prophets practiced penance of the severe type - going without food or water for weeks and months.

Lord Mahaveer's fast for six months is described in detail in the scriptures.

Penance ensures not only restraint (Sanwar) but also separation of karmas from the Soul (Nirjara) thus freeing the Soul from their bondage and hastening liberation (Moksha). Penance has been divided into two categories - external (Bahiya) and internal (Abhyantar). Each is further divided into six sub-divisions. Both are aimed at purification of the Soul and both must be supported by absence of passions.
