Preksha Meditation & Human Health: 5.4 Respiratory Functions

Published: 25.09.2015

For this purpose the machine "Medspiror" manufactured by Medsystem Pvt. Ltd., Chandigarh was used to measure respiratory profiles.

Spirometry is relatively easy to administer and standardize and has become portable enough to use at outreach clinics as well as in hospitals. Spirometry should be interpreted using the flow volume and volume time curves as well as the absolute values for flows and volumes. The flow volume loop and volume time curve are often overlooked but provide valuable information

Normal values for Peak Inspiratory flow rate, Peak Expiratory flow rate, Vital Capacity, Forced Vital Capacity, Maximum Voluntary Ventilation were based according to race, height, age, and gender. They are expressed in both absolute numbers and percent predicted of normal. Some authors have suggested that defining normal by 95% confidence intervals would be more statistically appropriate, particularly at the extremes of age. Thus, a value below the 5th percentile is defined as "below the lower limit of normal." However, many laboratory and computer software programs continue to express results as percentages of predicted normal values.

Operational Instructions

  1. Inserted a clean mouthpiece for every person
  2. Sealed lips around the mouthpiece
  3. After two normal breathings and the machine turned on it was said to the person to breath in as deep and fast as possible (to full expiration and inspiration)
  4. The result was inspected on the computer screen.
  5. Two normal breathings and one deep inspiration to full extent.
  6. The air blown out in one continuous forceful exhalation, until there was nothing left to blow
  7. The result was inspected on the screen and exported to excel for analysis.
