Trikonasana
(Triangle Posture)
The name of asana is indicative that body forms a triangle during practice hence its name Trikonasana ('Tri' meaning 'Three' and 'Kon' meaning 'Angle').
Method
- Stretch out both feet as far as is comfortable. Turn right foot rightwards so that it is perpendicular to left foot. Bend right knee at right angles. Bring right hand in front of right foot and left hand over head.
- Left foot points towards front.
- Breathing in deeply and slowly raise right arm towards sky so that arm touches ear.
- Breathing out, bend upper body towards left foot as shown in picture.
- Place left palm to right of left foot. In this state, right arm touches ear and remains parallel to body.
- Remain in this position for a little while and then slowly breathing out return to starting position. Repeat this with other hand.
Duration
Initially practice this asana for half a minute and then increase time to three minutes. Remember not to hold breath forcibly.
Precaution
Practice this asana slowly, gently and thereafter continue steadily.
Effect on Health
With practice of this asana, beauty of body and strength in shoulders, neck, waistline and arms increases. Practice of this asana is also very useful for curing knee pain. Body becomes flexible and lethargy is gone.
Practice of this asana mainly influences thyroid and adrenal glands, liver and kidney and as a result hormonal secretion of these glands maintains their balance in body and functioning of all organs connected to these glands improves. The improved blood circulation is noticeable in appreciable improvement in overall health.

With practice of this asana, waist becomes shapely and flexible. Lungs becomes stronger, their capacity to release oxygen in blood increases resulting in purification of blood. Pimples are cured resulting in a glowing complexion. As enough pressure is generated on buttocks large intestine is also influenced thus helping bowels to empty out easily. Muscles of legs become strengthened and extra fat on waist disappears. Disorders due to a dull digestive system like flatulence, weak and sluggish intestines are cured easily.
