The first five pranas keep five sense organs (indriya) active.Pranas that keep mind, words and body active are Manobal, Vachanbal and Kaybal Prana.
Consciousness is manifested through Prana in body. Prana is found in every nook and cranny in body. According to Jain tradition divisions of Prana are expressed as follows:
The Shwasochavas Prana keeps entire body active by aiding in process of blood cleansing.
Aayush Prana is basis of life expectancy. The pranas that direct flow of stream of consciousness up to body work in a variety of ways in body. For example, activity of organ of hearing is managed by Shrotendriya Prana.
There are two types of sense organs-Dravya and Bhava. Dravya Indri is external, of material world and its physical presence is evident for all to see (eyes, ears, nose, mouth and skin) while Bhav Indri is internal. Dravya Indri receives messages of Bhava Indri before any sense organs activates itself. Dravya Indri also absorbs external world and delivers it to Bhava Indri thus connecting the external world with internal. All other sense organs work in a similar fashion.
Mann Prana, Vachan Prana and Kaya Prana perform their functions in an orderly and disciplined manner.
Mann Prana absorbs thought emanations (manovargana) via body and functions by manifesting them through thought, mulling over thought, memory and imagination.
Similarly Vachan Prana absorbs sound emanations (bhashavargana) through body and functions by manifesting them through thoughts, indications, language and oral expression.
Kaya Prana generate and circulate energy through each and every part of body.
Dravya Indri and the Dravya Prana, Bhava Indri and Bhav Prana are material and non-material respectively.
