Gods and goddesses like Brahma, Indra, Vāyu, Varuṇa, Srīdevī, and Sarasvatī appear in Buddhist and Jaina sculptures and literature. Since Buddhism and Jainism flourished as coeval religions of a common region, many concepts have developed simultaneously between them, either independently or out of mutual influence. Indra and Brahma figure as attendants of Buddha, in the sculpture from the Swat region (now in Pakistan), dateable to the first century of CE. Buddhist texts refers to Sarasvatī as Vajravīṇa Sarasvatī, Vajraśāradā and Parjñāpāramitā. Because of Buddhism, other countries like Japan have adopted and assimilated Hindu deities according to their local style.
