Restrain of Speech
The frequency (or lack of frequency) of talking by a person determines his personality. Acharya Tulsi believed that expressing ones feelings through minimum verbal expressions is the art of speaking. He would practice silence every day, but when he found it necessary, he chose to use the least amount of verbalization necessary to convey his thoughts. According to him, silence renders peace and bliss. Control of speech helps in relieving stress and contributes to attaining holistic health.
Acharya Tulsi undertook several resolutions in order to empower the intrinsic quality of the self.
He practised (maun) silence period for two hours every day, beginning in 1950. On the first and sixteenth day of every month. He would practice silence for 24 hours. These were his meditation introspection day.
Restrain of Physical Activity
Asana and pranayam are among the best ways to achieve physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Asana and pranayam was the integral part of his life. He used to exercise various asans like halasana, sarvangasana, matsyasana and uttanpadasana. He practiced them all, well into his seventies.
He would practice pranayam such as anuloma-viloma pranayam, sarvendriya-gopan mudra, khechari mudra and animesh preksha. He believed both asana and pranayam activate and energize the body, enhance the mental and emotional potentials, stabilize the vital energy, make the aura powerful, strengthen the nervous system and help in purifying the soul.
In order to terminate the obstacles and to realize the self, mantra chanting plays an important role. Acharya Tulsi considered that mastering some of the mantras is necessary for a leader to achieve an effective personality. That is why he spent a good amount of time in practicing mantras.
