When practice of Vajrasana is performed lying down, it is known as Suptvajrasana. Method sit in Vajrasana. Now take hands behind and place them on waist. Slowly with help of elbows or palms allow your body to lie down on mat. Keeping neck straight, slowly bend head and place top of head on floor. Remember that in this posture front part of neck, where thyroid gland is located, should be totally stretched. Eyes will remain open. Eyes, nose and mouth will be in opposite direction to the body. Place palms on thighs. If you feel that it is not possible to place upper part of head to floor, then you can also perform this asana by keeping neck in normal position. If your are planning to assume this posture for a longer time, then it is advisable to do so by keeping neck in normal position. In this posture back of head remains on floor so one can comfortably be in this asana for a longer time.

Effect on Health

Practice of this asana accords total health. Blood circulation in shoulders, thighs, below knees and buttock region of the body remains in order. Strength and firmness is achieved in muscles, in legs as well as joints of waist by practice of this asana. Pain and other disorders vanish from legs and waist region. The abdomen, chest and spine are also positively affected. This asana can also be practiced after a meal. This is an ideal asana for digesting food. In fact, digestive system becomes so strong that even if one consumes 'vajra' (the thunderbolt-Lord Indra's weapon) that too will be digested by body. Practice of this asana has proved its efficacy in the removal of gastric disorders. Regular practice of this asana can enhance memory power also.

Its efficacy has been proven as a cure for a dangerous diseases like diabetes. If this asana is practiced regularly even problems like paralysis can also be resolved. The capacity of blood formation and purification is also enhanced because of strengthened digestive system. Regular practice of this asana augments production of white blood cells thus boosting immune system.

The gonads and thyroid are main glands, which are affected by this asana. The stretch felt by gonads relieves not only mental stress but also generates pure and humble feelings. This asana purifies apan vayu. The stretch felt by seminal vesicles keeps urinary system and seminal vesicles healthy and balanced. Vigour and vitality (veerya) flow upwards and disorders related to gallbladder and prostate glands are cured. Practice of this asana is very beneficial for students who are battling excessive sleeping habits. This battle can be won through regular practice of this asana.

The longer this asana can be practiced the better. The question may arise, why? The answer is there is no other simpler asana than this with multiple beneficial effects.

During practice if concentration can be focused on the centre of intuition (Ajna Chakra, between eyebrows), the awakening of inner vision is possible. The entire nervous system and organs of body remain healthy and strong with practice of this asana.
