Kayotsarga Shataka is a treatise, which throws light on kayotsarga. Very important information about kayotsarga is available in it. How does kayotsarga benefit? It is said, "It sets right the inertia of the body and the intellect." The ancient commentators referred to the physical and the mental inertia which kayotsarga corrects. In the modern scientific age, many new things emerge in the process of rectifying age; many new things emerge in the process of rectifying the inertia of the body. Kayotsarga rectifies the blood disorders as well as delusion. The illness resulting from the physical disorder would be cured by kayotsarga. For the blood pressure problems, kayotsarga acts like a sanjivini booti [medicine that revives life].
Those who were suffering from blood pressure problems when they joined the Prekshadhyana camp were asked to practise kayotsarga. The result was that those whose blood pressure was 170 came down to 140 after practising kayotsarga for half an hour. Kayotsarga for half an hour makes all that difference. If the practice is continued for a longer period, it can make a lot of difference. There is a special process of practising kayotsarga for a long period. In the case of a severe mental problem, the person was asked to practise kayotsarga for the whole day and night on the first day. On the second day, the duration was made shorter. On the third day, he was asked to practise kayotsarga for the whole day and night and on the fourth day for a shorter duration. This followed for nine days. Serious mental problems can be solved if kayotsarga is practised in this manner.
Kayotsarga is a long process. Kayotsarga is for one day, two days and for twelve days. Kayotsarga for long durations is very beneficial for blood pressure and heart problems. It is very useful for the heart, the brain and the spinal column. The main purpose of kayotsarga is to give rest to all the three. Everything is fine if the heart, the brain and the spinal column are in good condition. If they are functioning properly maintaining health becomes fairly easy. There is no other important remedy or treatment for the mental tension and the resulting disorders that can be equal to kayotsarga. When a patient goes to a psychiatrist, the first thing he is asked to do is to stretch himself and completely relax. What is meant is the relaxation of the muscles, of the brain nerves, of the whole body. Such relaxation results in the balance of the prana. The balance of the prana is achieved in the posture of kayotsarga.
