Diseases are of two kinds: (1) sudden and (2) result of karma. Winter or summer season comes and people get various seasonal illnesses. Supposing a man gets involved in an accident and is injured. This happens as a result of the asat vedaniya karma. The sat vedaniya karma is not rising. The sat vedaniya karma has already brought the asat vedaniya to fruition. This is a process. It is known as the sudden disease. This may have resulted from factors like vata in terms of the Ayurveda or virus in terms of modern medical science. That too is a disease, which has appeared suddenly. It brings the asat vedaniya karma forcibly on the surface.

There is a person who experiences a happy sensation. He is facing no problem. A man may be just sitting and is suddenly hit by a car. That is a situation, which has suddenly come up. Such a situation brings the asat vedaniya forcibly on the surface and that person starts experiencing pain. Because he is in the midst of an unhappy situation, he experiences the asat vedaniya. Sometimes there is also a situation in which a person experiencing the sat vedaniya suddenly starts experiencing a problem. Pondering over this question, the acharyas of Ayurveda have said that even a sudden illness affects the three humours of our body, that is, the vata, pitta and shleshma and we feel sick. This is the udirana (premature realization) of the asat vedaniya karma.

Then there is a situation when, through its own process, the karma comes on the surface that is, it comes to fruition. When the asat vedaniya karma comes to fruition, it creates by itself the condition of unhappiness, making the person experience the asat. With the experience of the asat, it gets related to the disease. The body experiences pain, it experiences the unpleasant sensation and some disease or, the other surfaces itself. It is difficult to know which disease results from the fruition of which karma. It is a very subtle reality. By going deep into that subtlety, it is possible to know the fruition of which karma leads to which disease. Thinking from the gross point of view, it is clearly known that there is some kind of sensation, which becomes the cause of one disease or the other.
