Mahavira's Scripture Of Health: [04.02] Bio-Potential And Health - Body And Health (Sharira And Svasthya)

We are discussing the sermon and health theory as propounded by Lord Mahavira. Mahavira mentioned five types of the body:

1. Audarika sharira the gross body
2. Vaikriya sharira the protease body [capable of transformation at will]
3. Aharaka sharira the communication body [created ad hoc]
4. Taijas sharira the luminous body
5. Karmana sharira the subtler body

There is the gross body which is perceptible. Then there are two bodies: the subtle body and the subtler body, these both are not perceptible and are not visible to us. The two bodies are that they are created. Basically, there are three bodies: the gross body or the audarika body, the subtle body or the taijas body and the subtler body or the karmana body. All these three bodies are closely related to health. In spite of the development of a large number of mechanical equipments, the subtle body and the subtler body have not been caught by these mechanical equipments. Mysteries of the gross body have been known with the help of the microscopic equipments but the subtle body and the subtler body that influence the gross body have not been caught by any mechanical equipment. If we think in terms of the Jain philosophy, it can be said that the gross body is the reflection of the subtle body. In other words, all the vibrations of the karma-sharira after being reflected create some organ in the gross body to represent it. It should be accepted that the gross body is the concordant part of the subtle body. Let us try to understand this point with the help of an illustration. There is a unit of knowledge in the karma-sharira, which has found its concordant part in the brain. There is a definite centre of sensitivity from where sensitivity carries out its function. There is one unit of the feeling determining karma. The sensation of pain is also reflected in this body.
