A person engaged in spiritual practice should understand, clearly, the distinction between yam and niyam.
Yam is permanent and beyond time and space.
Niyam is transitory and related to time and space.
Since concepts of yam and niyam are not clear, many false ideas are born.
It is beautifully written in Atri Samhita that:
Yaman sevet satatam, na nityam niyaman budhaha
yamaan patatyakurvano niyamaan kevalan bhajan.
Knowledgeable person should continuously follow the path of Yama not only Niyama.
One who is not follow the Yama and only follow the Niyama, he will fall from spirituality.
