The life of a monk means a life of spiritual practice.
There is not just one type of spiritual practice.

As many forms of attainment there are, so many forms of spiritual practices are there.
The first type of attainment is the attainment of knowledge.
Reading alone does not bring knowledge.
Along with it one develops an evolved consciousness.

The essence of knowledge is conduct.

When a person's conduct inspires faith, then his attainment of knowledge becomes a spiritual practice.
That conduct, which does not inspire faith and does not develop the character of the person, can be without hesitation, termed as ignorance.
