We have senses through which we understand the outside world.
We cannot use them to know the inner world.

Every man is endowed with a lot, but he is unaware of all that.
So spiritual seers have said - draw the senses inwards but do not absorb their content.
Whether the eyes are shut or open, do not attach your vision to the form you see.
The detachment of the senses from their content establishes contact with the inner treasures.
The purpose of meditation is to establish contact with the inner treasures.
